I will remember this night for the rest of my life.
Sitting on my patio. Full moon. Trees dancing in the breeze. Something unseen, crunching and munching in the bushes. Frogs serenading the river. The men playing drums and singing to the moon and the stars and the sky and each other on the dune. I can hear their smiles. Feel the way they lean into each other, sound answering sound.
Birds tucked in for the night above my head. The soft creak of their occasional shifting. The world suspended. Everything deep, deep blue and that burnt umber color. Ochre pressed into shadow. The plateau in the far blue distance. The dunes roll like folds of the earth…anywhere…blanketed in darkness.
Stars beginning to appear.
And I sit here feeling like I am out of time, as though I am no longer on earth. I am full and empty all in the same moment. Unmeasured.
My mouth yearns to bite something …to possess this feeling. To sink my teeth into the marrow of this vignette I’ve found. I’ve been here before. I’ve known it forever. I’ll come back again. And again.
Every time it will look different, and every time, it will be mine.
